WHAT IS THIS PROGRAM ABOUT?
This program will cover the tax and non-tax aspects of planning for the smooth transition of the family business, and what can go wrong when planning is not done or ignored. Our panel will review options for transferring the business to the next generation in the most tax-beneficial way, and non-tax aspects to consider when advising clients, and options to consider when the next generation cannot handle the business. The program will also discuss probate and probate litigation issues when the planning is not done or is ignored, and issues to consider to avoid the financial and emotional distress that accompanies a family battle.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Understand the tax issues involved in the transition of a family business
- Explain how personal and non-tax issues need to be factored into the transition plan
- Identify opportunities to counsel family members and help the client avoid potential family fighting and probate litigation
